Penguin Penquin Rare Art Deco Retro Pewter Wood Box
Here is a terrific older rectangular pewter box (formerly for cigarettes--or a vanity, perhaps?) lined with a beautifully shiny burled wood veneer. It is topped with two different gold-dipped or painted pewter penguins (under the glitter). The box is exquisite and definitely reminiscent of more elegant times. Even the underside is extraordinary, having a textured pebbly covering. Right in the middle of the underside are the markings "J.B." The box is in excellent condition with just a few scuffs, particularly on one corner. None take away anything from this fabulous box though. It would make a grand unisex jewelry box, especially for cuff links, earrings, rings, keys, etc. It opens silently and smoothly. The penguins atop it have been sold as figurines on their own, which is how we can verify they are pewter. The box is a rare piece, measuring 6"x 3 3/4" x 2", so if you like unique Deco items, or penguins, don't miss out on this very rare work of art, a truly fine feathered friend--and a fabulous find if you need an unusual gift!
